Rory McIlroy is still planning to return at next week’s WGC-Mexico Championship, his manager confirmed to GolfChannel.com on Monday.
McIlroy hasn’t played since Jan. 15, when he lost a playoff to Graeme Storm in the South African Open. The world No. 3 was later diagnosed with a stress fracture in his ribs.
McIlroy targeted Mexico – a four-round, no-cut event, with a scheduled week off following the tournament – as his return date.
“That’s still the plan,” McIlroy’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty, said in an email. “Rory is aiming to play next week in Mexico.”
McIlroy told NoLayingUp.com that he played with President Donald Trump on Sunday in South Florida. McIlroy said he played off the forward tees but that his swing was nearly full speed.
